Container Recycling

Introduction

Various types of reagent container can be recycled via the VWR recycling initiative. Recycling of empty reagent containers is an important way of reducing the waste we generate and the negative impact of our work on the environment. However, VWR will only accept containers for recycling if they are clean and purged of contents.

Container Types Recycled

The recycling initiative allows a range of containers to be sent back to VWR, but it is important to realise that there are limitations on the types of containers. Only the following types of container are accepted by VWR for recycling:

  • Glass Bottles
  • Plastic Bottles
  • Steel Drums

Process

The School has to sign an annual declaration from VWR regarding the containers being recycled. This includes a statement that the containers are all "cleaned and purged" of the original contents (whether "harmful" or not). If we do not sign this declaration, VWR will suspend pickup of the containers. So we comply with the terms of our declaration, the following process must be followed:

  1. Container lids must be removed and discarded
  2. Containers must be thoroughly cleaned and purged of all contents
  3. Containers must have a completed check-list (see below) stuck to them (stick this over any hazard symbol)
  4. Containers must be deposited at the assigned collection point in your lab/area
  5. Containers will be collected by laboratory support staff who check all containers for completed stickers
  6. Containers are packaged for transport and the package labeled (see below) as safe for recycling
  7. Packaged containers are taken to stores for pick-up by DHL
