1. Small Equipment (amended 14/01/15)

  • An area has been designated for the storage of broken/obsolete small equipment before uplift by E&B. The area is in the waste recess at the west end of MSI. All equipment placed in this area must have a valid decontamination certificate. The certificate can be found on the asset register (on the front page, click on the top left button, scroll down to decontamination certificate).
  • Complete the certificate, amend the entry in the asset register to show that the equipment has been disposed of then take the completed form to the H&S Co-ordinator who will issue the key for the area. If you need to dispose of any item which is not registered on the asset register, there is a page in the back of the folder where you should record details of the item.
  • Underbench fridges and freezers should be treated as Large Equipment.

2. Computers (added 27/02/07)

  • Computer hard drives must be removed prior to disposal. Contact SLS Support to do this in situ after the computer has been decontaminated but before you dispose of the computer.
  • Once the hard drive has been removed the disposal route for Small Equipment should be followed.

3. Large Equipment & Furniture (added 30/08/12)

  • Large items of equipment and furniture for disposal must be uplifted by E&B directly from the lab or office they are in.
  • In special circumstances, and only with permission from the Research Services Manager, large items may be moved to the JBC basement 'holding area' prior to uplift.

4. Batteries (updated 11/05/2010)

  • This disposal route is for dry cell batteries only, e.g. the type used in pipette guns or radios, and not wet cell batteries, e.g. car batteries. Once the battery is fully used up, tape over both terminals with electrical insulating tape. Deposit the taped battery in the plastic box provided - see you Lab manager if you do not know where this box is - and replace the box lid. Once full, the Lab Manager will empty the box into the designated crate in the WTB Loading Bay and return the empty box to the lab. E&B will arrange for the crate to be emptied as required. Boxes should have a sign on the lid reminding staff to tape up both battery terminals before disposal.
  • Electrical insulating tape can be obtained from your Lab Manager.

5. Water Purification System Cartridges

  • Ensure spent water purification system cartridges are drained of water and the ports recapped before disposal.
  • Dispose of drained cartridges via the Blue Bag route.

6. HEPA Filters (updated 29/10/09)

  • HEPA filters that may be contaminated with biological material that could present a hazard to human health or the environment must be fumigated before removal from microbiological safety cabinets.Once removed by the engineer, the filter should be packaged in heavy duty yellow plastic bags (available from Safety Services' room in the WTB basement) and clearly labelled with "Waste HEPA Filter" and the lab of origin.Inform Martin Rollo that a waste HEPA filter is awaiting collection.
  • Take the packaged filter to the Waste Store in the JBC basement and leave it by the yellow bins within the roller door enclosure.

7. UV Tubes (added 07/01/10 )

  • UV tubes are collected by Safety Services along with chemical waste destined for the Chemical Waste Store.
  • Ensure the tubes are safely packaged and clearly labelled.
