Laboratory First Aid Procedure

During the normal working day, always summon one of the qualified First Aiders. The First Aider will decide whether further medical advice should be sought. If you cannot summon a First Aider, call 4141 and make it clear that your require First Aid assistance.

Below is some simple guidance in the event that a First Aider cannot attend quickly:

  • If skin/eyes have become contaminated with a hazardous substance, flush with copious amounts of tap water for at least 15 minutes.
  • If clothing has become contaminated with a hazardous substance, providing it will not exacerbate any injury, remove it then wash before reuse or discard.
  • If a hazardous substance has been inhaled, remove casualty to fresh air.
  • If a hazardous substance has been swallowed, providing person is conscious, wash mouth out with water. Do not induce vomiting.
  • If a hazardous substance has been injected via sharps, encourage the puncture wound to bleed and wash well under cold running water then cover with a dry sterile dressing.
