Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Facility SOPs

(updated 3/12/19)

Submission, Analysis and Sorting of Samples Requiring Level 2 Containment

The following generic SOPs cover the above and must be adhered to:

    • SOP 249 "Submission of CL2 biohazard samples to the Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Facility for fluorecence activated cell sorting (FACS)"
    • SOP 225 "Flow Cytometric Analysis of CL2 Samples "
    • SOP 250 "Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) of CL2 biohazard material on the SH800 cell sorter within the Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Facility"

SOPs can be downloaded from the UoD Safety Database, accessible at:

Samples requiring Level 2 Containment should already be covered by an approved risk assessment. A copy of this must be submitted to the Facility Manager well in advance of the samples being submitted. Depending upon the nature of the samples, a specific SOP may have to be drafted and approved before any analysis/sorting can be carried out.

The Facility Manager has the authority to refuse to accept samples if:

    • they are not submitted in accordance with SOP 249
    • an approved risk assessment has not been submitted
    • an approved, specfic SOP is required but has not been submitted

The Facility Manager can request review of a risk assessment or SOP, via SLS Safety, if they suspect that it may not be suitable and sufficient.
