The Medical Research Council’s Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (MRC PPU) is a world-leading research division, which is embedded within the School of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee. The major aim of the MRC PPU is to advance our understanding of the roles of protein phosphorylation and ubiquitylation in cell biology and human disease, in order to facilitate the development of new drugs to treat diseases caused by abnormalities in phosphorylation or ubiquitylation networks. We also aim to generate new reagents and improved technologies. A key remit of the MRC PPU is to train the next generation of scientists who will advance our understanding in this crucial area of medical research. We currently have 12 research groups and ~100 staff members. Many world leading researchers in the field of signal transduction have trained within the MRC PPU.
We invite applications for Principal Investigator positions at the tenured or tenure-track level, depending on experience, and welcome applications from researchers representing all minority groups (see below – “Diversity and equality of opportunity”). Applicants should have an exciting research programme aimed at understanding the role of phosphorylation and/or ubiquitylation pathways in cell biology of relevance to human disease. We are keen to receive applications from candidates with interest/expertise in all subject areas that might complement and enhance the current work of the MRC PPU and are also interested in applicants with expertise and interest in chemical biology and/or the molecular mechanisms of human disease. The successful applicant would receive MRC-PPU core funding that would support Postdoctoral Research Assistants and Ph.D. students together with a generous consumables budget. Alternatively, strong support for a fellowship application from a major funding body, together with support from MRC PPU for PhD students would be provided. The newly established group would have full access to the MRC PPU's outstanding research facilities and service teams including DNA cloning, Production of Proteins and Antibodies, Mass Spectrometry, as well as to other facilities in the School of Life Sciences, such as flow cytometry and advanced imaging.
Candidate requirements include:
-PhD in a relevant subject
-Proven track record in research and an excellent publication track record
-Significant research programme in the area of protein phosphorylation or ubiquitylation research, complementing other research within the MRC-PPU
-Ability to write successful grant applications
-Significant knowledge of the protein phosphorylation and/or ubiquitylation research areas.
The positions will be on the University of Dundee Grade 8 or Grade 9 salary scale depending on experience.

The MRC PPU is embedded within the School of Life Sciences (SLS) at the University of Dundee (http://www.lifesci.dundee.ac.uk/), which was rated top for Biological Sciences in the UK, by the latest University research performance assessment (REF2014). Division of Signal Transduction Therapy:
The MRC PPU also coordinates a unique collaboration between Dundee scientists (all group leaders in the MRC PPU, plus other senior figures in SLS) and three leading pharmaceutical companies (Boehringer Ingelheim, GlaxoSmithKline, Merck Serono), known as the Division of Signal Transduction Therapy or DSTT. The DSTT is widely regarded as a model for successful interaction between academia and industry, and helps to accelerate the early stages of drug discovery. The DSTT model effectively enables industrial researchers working in any of the worldwide outlets of three pharmaceutical companies to engage with the ~200 Dundee-based researchers that participate in the collaboration, and the successful candidate would have the opportunity to join this exciting endeavour.
