There is an emphasis on flexibility – you can explore both biological and biomedical streams before choosing your final pathway.
At levels 1 and 2, there is a heavy emphasis on gaining core laboratory skills and learning a broad range of fundamental biological and biomedical themes before specialization in Level 3 and 4.
At level 3, you choose either a Biological Sciences or Biomedical Sciences pathway. Biological Sciences focuses on researching the cellular and molecular biology underlying key biological processes both in the normal and disease context. Biomedical Sciences looks at researching new and improved ways to diagnose and treat human diseases.
At level 4, you do a specialist Honours project allowing development in advanced practical techniques, data interpretation, scientific writing, communication or literary analysis skills depending on the type of project undertaken.
We provide an optional integrated master’s degree as an additional year of study. This covers focused training in laboratory research and improves employability. Students develop their own research project, write this up in the form of a grant proposal, then carry out a five-month, full-time project.
