    Philip Hammond, Chancellor of the Exchequer, today visited the University of Dundee where he was given an insight into the world leading research being carried out in Life Sciences.   Dundee is the top-rated University in the UK for biological sciences research. Mr Hammond was given a tour of the School of Life Sciences including the Discovery Centre, the £50million building which was supported by direct funding from the UK Government.

    Dr Kim Dale from the School has been recently appointed as the University academic lead for International activity in the ASEAN region. This new role acknowledges all the work Kim has undertaken in the region on behalf of the University and the School in her position of SLS Associate Dean, International. In addition, Kim also has a research group in the division of Cell and Developmental Biology which is broadly interested in understanding how genetic interactions come into play at the earliest stages of development to build the developing embryo.

    Life Sciences researcher Professor Karim Labib has been awarded £2million to explore the role that one of the most fundamental processes in cell biology plays in cancer.  Professor Labib will receive the grant from Cancer Research UK to study mechanisms that preserve genome integrity during the final stages of chromosome replication in animal cells.

    A new diagnostic test developed from research at the Universities of Dundee and Cambridge has been launched with the aim of helping eliminate the disease known as African sleeping sickness. Sleeping sickness, or Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), is caused by parasites transmitted by tsetse flies in sub-Saharan Africa and has a devastating impact, causing thousands of deaths each year.

    The Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) in the School has generated £2.7 million income to the University from industrial collaborations for their high quality therapeutic projects where there is a clinical unmet need. This has been from progress in the derisking of novel potential drug targets with the aim of developing new, innovative treatments for disease, through its Innovative Targets Portfolio Programme.

  • Dr Marios Stavridis
    25 Aug 2017

    Dr Marios Stavridis, Lecturer in the D'Arcy Thompson Unit, has been appointed to the role of Programme Lead for Biological Sciences, taking up responsibility for leading on the delivery and management of all our Biological Sciences BSc degree programmes. In addition, Marios is academic lead for assessment and until earlier this year was the study exchanges coordinator for the School.

The Nature Index 2017 Innovation supplement sheds new light on the impact academic research is having on innovation by examining how research articles are cited in third-party patents across the world.
