Dr Piers Hemsley, a Principal Investigator in the Division of Plant Sciences, has been awarded tenure today. Piers conducts research with the aim to understand how protein S-acylation (palmitoylation) acts to control protein function, with particular emphasis on its role in stress responses and development in plants. Alongside this, Piers is the teaching lead for Plant Sciences which includes being course coordinator for the level 4 plant sciences programme. He also is actively involved in public engagement with activities such as the Gatsby Trust Plant Sciences Masterclasses.

Charlotte Hurst has been recognised for her research and science communication work by the Society for Experimental Biology (SEB) and the Biochemical Society respectively. Charlotte was named Young Plant Scientist of the Year at the SEB Annual Meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden last month and shortlisted for the Biochemical Society Science Communication competition, video category.

A collaboration between Dr Piers Hemsley at the University of Dundee / The James Hutton Institute and Professor Simon Turner at the University of Manchester has revealed an entirely new mechanism regulating the synthesis of cellulose in plants.
