Complementary and collaborative research from the research groups of Professor Julian Blow and Professor Tim Newman has been published in two sister papers in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The work focuses on experimental and theoretical evidence that unreplicated DNA can pass through mitosis for resolution in the following cell cycle.

The spreading of a cancerous tumour from one part of the body to another may occur through pure chance instead of key genetic mutations, a new study has shown. Physicists from the University of Dundee and Arizona State University have used a statistical model to show that the formation of a new secondary tumour—commonly known as a metastasis—could just as likely derive from “common” cancer cells that circulate in the bloodstream, as from “specialist” cancer cells.

This Friday, 25th October 2013, the College of Life Sciences will celebrate the formation of its newest research division. The Division of Computational Biology brings together scientists with skills in developing and applying computational, mathematical and biophysical techniques to questions in biological and medical research.

The University of Dundee has appointed five new Professors, two of whom are from the College of Life Sciences. Timothy Newman of the Division of Cell and Developmental Biology is the Chair of Biophysics and Caroline Wilkinson of the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification is the Personal Chair of Craniofacial Identification.
