    Professor Jason Swedlow, member of The Wellcome Trust Centre for Gene Regulation and Expression in the College of Life Sciences and his software development team, were named “Innovator of the Year 2011” for their work on the Open Microscopy Environment (OME) - a revolutionary venture into open source software.

    The College of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee has won two of the three major prizes at the 2011 BBSRC (Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council) Impact Awards. The College of Life Sciences won the award for `Greatest delivery of impact’ while Professor Jason Swedlow was named `Innovator of the Year’.

    A bake-sale in aid of Japanese Tsunami disaster fund was held on the morning of the 21st of March in the Atrium of Wellcome Trust Building. Tetsuya Muramoto from Jonathan Chubb’s lab and Etsushi Kitamura from Tomo Tanaka’s lab in GRE organised the event and rallied people from the CLS and Dundee Japanese community to join forces and bake in aid of the victims of the devastating Tsunami that hit the North-east of Japan this year.

    Salma Mahmoud from Tom Owen-Hughes lab successfully passed her PhD viva on Monday 21st February 2011.  Salma's title was "Investigating the mechanisms of action of the Snf2-homolog protein Fun30".  She presented her research at 1030 hrs.  Her internal examiner was Professor Mike Stark and her external examiner was Dr Sari Pennings, University of Edinburgh

    Congratulations to Ron Hay, the recipient of the 2012 Novartis Medal and Prize. This is the third consecutive year that the Novartis Prize has been awarded to a CLS scientist and the second consecutive year it has been won by PIs at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Gene Regulation and Expression. Angus Lamond was the recipient of the prize for 2011. Previous winners of the Prize from the College of Life Sciences also include and Grahame Hardie in 2010 and Sir Philip Cohen who gave the Novartis Medal Lecture in Warwick in 1992.

    The Wellcome Image Awards 2011 were announced at a ceremony at the Wellcome Collection in London on Wednesday, 23rd February 2011. The 21 winning images are the most visually striking, technically excellent and informative images that have been acquired by the Wellcome Images picture library in the past sixteen months. Among the 21 winning images was Chromosome lifetime map by the Wellcome Trust Centre for Gene Regulation and Expressions’ David Lleres.
