Grade 7 (£29,541 - £36,298)

The Central Light Microscopy Facility is an established core service housing the College’s advanced imaging equipment, including Multiphoton, FLIM, Widefield deconvolution, confocal, TIRF, structured illumination and spinning disk microscopes. Historically, the role of the facility was to provide commercial turnkey solutions in a service-focused environment.

Recently, the strategic role of the facility has extended to provide a forum for collaborative interaction between life sciences researchers and colleagues in the School of Engineering, Physics and Mathematics with a particular emphasis on biophotonics and applied optics.

As part of an initiative to kick start new collaborations, a 12 month fixed term post has become available for an enthusiastic physical scientist to integrate and develop novel illumination sources and beam shaping techniques for life science applications. Reporting to the Head of Light Microscopy and with significant input from colleagues within the Applied Optical Manipulation, Photonics and Nanoscience, Ultrafast photonics and Biophotonics groups the successful candidate will play a leading role in assessing the value of novel illumination sources and optical manipulation in developing new tools for image-based research projects in the life sciences.

Essential requirements:

- PhD in photonics, biophotonics, optical imaging or related area
- experience in instrumentation control
- experience of microscope-based imaging approaches
- ability to work in a team
- ability to work with research staff across disciplines
- flexibility to solve problems

Desirable requirements:

- specific experience with laser tweezers, holographic beam shaping or ultrafast lasers
