Professor Lady Tricia Cohen was one of the two co-founding Principal Investigators (PIs) of the MRC Protein Phosphorylation Unit (MRC-PPU) at the University of Dundee when it was set up in 1990. In those days, the Unit comprised only 15 scientific and support staff but has since grown to 14 PIs and over 200 scientific and support staff. Tricia joined the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Dundee in 1971, where she was the first woman to combine running a research team with bringing up a young family. Tricia became a pioneer in developing our understanding of protein phosphatases, the enzymes that remove phosphate from proteins, an area in which she had an international reputation. She died from lymphoma in 2020.

We are seeking applications from bright and enthusiastic students with an outstanding academic record and passion for research for the second Tricia Cohen Prize Studentship. We aim to recruit inclusively and applications from all backgrounds and nationalities are welcomed. Students will have access to all the world class research facilities of the MRC-PPU and Schools of Life Sciences and Medicine. The stipend is £20,000 per annum tax-free, fees are covered, as well as the cost of attending an international conference during the PhD.
