    Dr. Victoria Cowling has been awarded one of three highly coveted Lister Research Prizes for 2011. These prizes which give young scientists the opportunity to develop their potential as research scientists by giving them £200,000 in flexible funding over a five-year period. The Lister Institute's approach to scientific support continues to be unique in that it funds tenured and non-tenured researchers, clinicians and non-clinicians and has no priority diseases or restrictions on the research area supported.

    Professor Doreen Cantrell, Head of the College of Life Sciences and Vice-Principal of the University of Dundee, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Professor Cantrell is one of 44 new Fellows and eight new Foreign Members elected to the Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of science. She has been recognized for her internationally renowned work in the field of immunology.

    Researchers at the new Division of Cell Signalling and Immunology at the College of Life Sciences, Dundee have developed new insights into the operation of white blood cells which play a vital role in fighting viral infections and dealing with organ transplants. Cytotoxic T cells are a subpopulation of white blood cells that have an essential role in fighting fight viral infections. They work by killing the cells in our bodies that are infected with viruses. They also play a key role in how the human body rejects organ transplants.

    Sander van Kasteren who until recently was a Henry Wellcome Fellow in Colin Watts’s lab has won a 2012 Biochemical Society Early Career Research Award. Now at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Sander won the award for research carried out in the Watts lab at CLS. The Award is for work carried out under the research Theme Panel: Biotechnology & Bioinformatics.
