Last week, the School’s Annual Research Symposium was held at Crieff Hydro. The programme of talks and poster presentations covered the diverse research taking place in the School. Newly appointed Principal Investigators and Professors gave talks alongside more junior members of the School, who spoke as part of the SLS showcase sessions.

Dr Robyn Hickerson and her team won the Research Staff Award at Venture 2019 competition hosted by the University of Dundee’s Centre of Entrepreneurship. The final involved pitching budding business ideas to an expert panel of judges with the chance to share in a £27,500 prize fund.

Researchers from the Schools of Life Sciences and Medicine have been awarded a £275,000 grant from Diabetes UK. This inter-divisional and cross-School funding has been awarded to Professor Hari Hundal (Division of Cell Signalling & Immunology), Dr Ian Ganley (MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit) and Professor Rory McCrimmon (School of Medicine).

A number of school prizes were presented at Review of the Year today. Innovator of the Year New for this year, Innovator of the Year, two categories were introduced for best innovation and for early-stage new business ideas. In partnership with the Centre of Entrepreneurship, the winners are guaranteed an automatic place in the appropriate category of the University of Dundee, Venture 2019 Final, plus a chance to participate in the on-campus three month summer Elevator accelerator programme.

Three of our undergraduate students were recognised in the Undergraduate Awards 2018. Emma Sands, Emily Scott and Daniel Squair were Highly Commended in the Life Sciences category. This means that they were in the top 10% for their category and this included entrants from students across the world! The awards aim to celebrate top undergraduate coursework and foster interdisciplinary collaboration between students and recent graduates worldwide. Our students submitted work based on their fourth year honours project.

Kevin Read and Simon Arthur have been promoted to Personal Chair (Professor) as part of the 2017 Annual Review process for academic staff. Kevin Read will become Professor of Quantitative Pharmacology while Simon Arthur will be Professor of Immune Signalling. “I would like to congratulate both Kevin and Simon on their well-deserved promotions,” said Professor Julian Blow, Dean of Research in the School of Life Sciences. “Both have made significant contributions to their respective fields over a sustained period of time as well as contributing to teaching our undergraduates.”

Professor Doreen Cantrell, Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow at the School of Life Sciences, gave the Novartis Medal and Prize Lecture today at Charles Darwin House, London, UK. Seen as one of the UK’s most prestigious honours in biochemistry, the prize is awarded annually in recognition of contributions to the development of any branch of biochemistry and is open to candidates of any nationality working in the UK and Ireland. Professor was the 2017 recipient.

A scientific collaboration between researchers in Scotland and China has uncovered a new kind of `energy sensor’ in our cells, changing our understanding of how the body monitors glucose levels and switches on the supply of alternative `fuels’. It is thought the research, published in the journal Nature, could have particular implications for diabetes, in which the level of glucose in the blood is abnormally high.
