    Gabriel Sollberger has been awarded funding from the Springboard scheme of the Academy of Medical Sciences, which is designed to help early career researchers establish their independent research programmes.

    Collaborative research between scientists in the Division of Cell Signalling and Immunology and the University of Leeds has been published in eLife. The work highlights a new cytokine signalling model that helps to understand how cytokine responses become dysregulated and contribute to the development of autoimmune diseases – such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

    In the summer of 2019, undergraduate student Fergus Buchanan undertook a lab project with Dr Alan Prescott. The research undertaken has been published in Frontiers in Immunology as part of a collaboration with the group of Diego Gomez-Nicola in Southampton. The Pathological Society funded summer school project allowed Fergus to gain confocal and electron microscopy experience from one of the School’s foremost experts over a 12 week period.

    Scotland’s next wave of entrepreneurs have been unveiled as the University of Dundee crowned the winners of its annual competition for business concepts, some of whom come from the School.  Thirteen enterprising students and staff members from across the University walked away with a share of a record £38,000 prize fund after the winners of Venture 2021 were announced.

    Review of the Year 2020 took place virtually today with the Dean, Inke Nathke sharing the highlights of activity within the School from 2020 which was dominated by the coronavirus pandemic. The Review included the presentation of the annual School prizes, many were awarded in recognition of how many members of our School community worked so hard to ensure the School could still undertake its work while ensuring the safety for all. The People’s Award, the newly established Dean’s Commendation and Merit Award and PiCLS Best Mentor Award recognised some of those people.

    Cytokines play a crucial role overseeing the correct functioning of the immune system. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a critical immune-modulatory cytokine that helps to initiate and sustain the inflammatory response. The IL-6–Janus kinase (JAK)–STAT3 signalling is important for cancers resulting from the activation of the intrinsic inflammatory pathway. Yet, despite its relevancy for human health, we have a poor understanding of how IL-6 elicits its pleiotropic activities.

    Six University of Dundee researchers have been named on a “who’s who” list of the world’s most influential academics. Four experts from the University’s School of Life Sciences, and a further two from the School of Medicine, have been named in Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers 2020 list.
