    A University of Dundee-led programme that will train the next generation of barley researchers has received a multi-million pound investment. The £9 million Barley Industrial Training Network (BARIToNE) programme is a Collaborative Training Partnership (CTP) led by the University, Scotch Whisky Research Institute, International Barley Hub, and supported by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and industry partners.

    Professor Robbie Waugh, a renowned barley geneticist based at the James Hutton Institute and the University of Dundee, has been appointed Director of International Barley Hub (IBH). Professor Waugh said, “I’m delighted to take on the challenge of leading IBH. Barley is one of the UK’s most valuable crops and investing in barley research can yield great returns and is likely to have a significant economic impact.”

    New gene combinations in barley could prove a budding success for breeders and brewers across the world, according to a new study by plant scientists at the University of Dundee and the James Hutton Institute. The study, published in New Phytologist, suggests new barley lines created by bringing together novel genetic variation, could dramatically benefit the brewing and distilling industries by offering improved grain quality.

    Dundee’s position as an international hub for research into cereals – particularly barley – has been given a boost with the award of a grant which will create new connections with Australia. The award of a £150,000 from the Universities UK International Rutherford Fund Strategic Partner initiative will allow the University of Dundee to bring seven Early Career Researchers from Australia to Dundee for periods ranging from one to twelve months between March 2018 and March 2019.

    A University of Dundee academic has been awarded more than £600,000 to study an increasing problem with the cereal crop barley that impacts the commercially important malting process and the shelf-life of animal feed.  Dr Sarah McKim, a School of Life Sciences researcher based at the James Hutton Institute, was awarded a BBSRC research grant to investigate the unfavourable trait, called ‘skinning’, and to develop tools to track it in breeding populations.

    Scientists from the International Barley Hub have discovered a genetic pathway to improved barley grain size and uniformity, a finding which may help breeders develop future varieties suited to the needs of growers and distillers.

    Ten partnership building projects, including two from the School, have been awarded internal Pump-Priming Funding from the University’s SFC GCRF funding allocation. The aim of the competition, coordinated by Research & Innovation Services (RIS), is to enhance our ability to respond to funding opportunities under the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF).
