As part of a Royal Society Teacher Partnership Grant Dr Nicola Stanley Wall and Jane Parker are running a project entitled Molecular Microbes with students from S1 at the Bell Baxter School.

Two Principal Investigators from the College of Life Sciences have been made members of the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s new and highly regarded “RSE Young Academy of Scotland”. Dr. Nicola Stanley-Wall and Dr. Sarah Coulthurst from the Division of Molecular Microbiology are two out of sixty-eight young academics to be selected for this exciting new initiative, the first of its kind in the UK.

School students and members of the public attended a two-day event on 21 and 22 May 2010: a hands-on science experience for school children and the general public held at local science centre Sensation at which microbiologists from the College of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee invited visitors to discover the wondrous world of Magnificent Microbes. Although most microbes are invisible to the naked eye, our bodies contain millions of them, they help shape our environment, and we use them without knowing it everyday.

Two microbiologists from the University of Dundee have been honoured for their work with prestigious awards from the Society for General Microbiology. Professor Geoff Gadd and Dr Nicola Stanley-Wall, both of the Division of Molecular and Environmental Microbiology in the College of Life Sciences at Dundee, have been awarded the Colworth Prize and the Fleming Medal respectively, two of the Society’s top awards.

Two PIs from the Division of Molecular and Environment Microbiology in the College of Life Sciences have received prestigious awards from the Society for General Microbiology (SGM). Dr. Nicola Stanley-Wall has been awarded the 2009 Fleming Prize in recognition of her outstanding research on the molecular basis of biofilm formation.
