Cytokines play a crucial role overseeing the correct functioning of the immune system. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a critical immune-modulatory cytokine that helps to initiate and sustain the inflammatory response. The IL-6–Janus kinase (JAK)–STAT3 signalling is important for cancers resulting from the activation of the intrinsic inflammatory pathway. Yet, despite its relevancy for human health, we have a poor understanding of how IL-6 elicits its pleiotropic activities.

The University of Dundee has welcomed the signing of the Tay Cities Deal, which will boost efforts to capitalise on our world-class strengths in biomedicine and forensic science, creating hundreds of new jobs and attracting further investment. The University is leading two major projects within the Tay Cities Deal. These will bring a combined £40million in funding to Dundee from the UK and Scottish Governments.

Tony Ly, who is a Wellcome Trust and Royal Society-funded Sir Henry Dale Fellow has joined the Centre for Gene Regulation and Expression as a Principal Investigator. Tony, formerly a postdoctoral researcher in SLS, was awarded a Sir Henry Dale Fellowship to start his independent research group at the Wellcome Centre for Cell Biology at the University of Edinburgh, but recently transferred his fellowship to Dundee.

Two projects led by School researchers have been awarded millions in funding to help develop their pioneering frontier research in life sciences. The European Research Council (ERC) today announced the winners of its latest Consolidator Grant competition, with a total of €655 million awarded to Europe’s top researchers to aid in the development of their research projects.

Some of the University of Dundee’s best business brains have been honoured as the winners of an enterprise skills competition were announced. AvaCare, an avatar-based app to deliver psychiatry and psychology appointments have been named as the winners of the University’s bi-annual Enterprise Challenge by an external judging panel of business experts.

Professor Geoff Gadd, Head of the Geomicrobiology Group, has received the 2020 British Mycological Society John Webster Fungal Biology Research award. This is the prime research award of the Society for an "outstanding contribution to fungal research" over a sustained career. It is named after the late John Webster, an eminent British mycologist at the University of Exeter.

The annual third year PhD poster session took place this week on-line, with excellent entries from 41 students across the School. Each poster was judged by three of the 14 judges, who included PIs and senior postdoctoral researchers – very many thanks to all who took part! The University of Dundee has become the first university in Scotland – and only the third in the UK – to receive a Gold Watermark in recognition of its commitment to public engagement. The National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) runs the Engage Watermark – a charter mark awarded to universities for excellence in their support and practice of public engagement in all aspects of their work. Dundee was awarded the highest level of accolade currently available following a rigorous assessment involving staff from across the University and partner organisations.

The o2h human health EIS Fund has announced its intention to lead an investment into In4Derm, an innovative drug discovery company that is developing next generation topical and oral therapies for widespread inflammatory conditions such as eczema and rheumatoid arthritis. Syndicating with o2h ventures are Meltwind and Wren to complete a first investment in In4Derm. A spin out from the School, the team has been recognised as Scotland’s top spin out opportunity for 2020 having won the top prize in the 2019 Converge Challenge competition.
