    Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma and Exscientia announce that a phase I clinical study of DSP-1181, that was created using Artificial Intelligence (AI), has been initiated in Japan for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder as an initial indication.

    The University of Dundee is among more than 30 international institutions joining forces to find new drug treatments for tuberculosis. The ERA4TB (European Regimen Accelerator for Tuberculosis) project is a public-private initiative dedicated to the development of drugs against tuberculosis. With a team of more than 30 organisations and a budget of over 200 million euros, ERA4TB will focus on developing a new, improved tuberculosis treatment. The partners will share their expertise, knowledge and resources to rapidly progress new candidate drugs into clinical trials.

    This month, our Central Technical Services started collecting the plastic recycling waste from pick-up points around the SLS complex. Any clean, dry and millable plastic, even coloured plastic can be recycled but it must be clean, contamination free and dry. Green recycling bins are now in place within all labs with guidance signage on what can and cannot be placed in them. In order to ensure the best standard operating procedure is in place, throughout January the CTS team, especially Scott MacQueen, Vicki Murray and Wendy Chalmers, have:

    Researchers at the University of Dundee have developed an unrivalled, fully automated robotic screening system which allows them to rapidly test the effect of drugs and other chemicals on human sperm. The research team at Dundee, led by Professor Chris Barratt and Dr Paul Andrews, are working towards finding a safe and effective male contraceptive. Results of their latest study, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, are published in the journal eLife.

    Esther Sammler, Clinical Programme Leader in the MRCPPU and Clinical Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant in the School of Medicine, has been awarded funding by Tenovus Scotland and a personal donation by Emeritus Professor Pierre Descouts (Universite de Geneve) and his wife Christine to continue research into Parkinson's disease.

  • Prokaryotic Metabolism and Physiology book cover

    The new advanced text book on Prokaryotic Metabolism and Physiology by Byung Hong Kim and Geoff Gadd has been published recently by Cambridge University Press. This book follows on from their successful earlier Bacterial Physiology and Metabolism, first published in 2008, has been extensively revised and updated to take account of latest scientific advances, particularly in genomics and in the understanding of the archaea.

    Professors Vicky Cowling and Tomo Tanaka were given Investigator Awards from Wellcome in the recent funding round. Vicky’s award of £1.3M will allow her to take her expertise on mRNA cap regulation in a new direction while Tomo’s award of ~£1.5M will allow him to continue to build new knowledge on the process of cell division. This will fund their programmes of research for 5 years.

    A study published this week in the journal eLife, by a team at University of Dundee's School of Life Sciences uses a new approach to reveal the complexity and modifications of RNA that are essential to genetic control. They passed RNA through pores developed by Oxford Nanopore Technology to reveal directly the sequence of 1000s of RNA molecules.
