I am a genomicist by training, and early in my career I studied aspects of the human genome. But the diversity of functions encoded by bacteria always interested me, and I moved to study bacterial genomes as part of my postdoc at the Berkeley labs in California, years 2006-2008. During my postdoc I became fascinated by the seminal CRISPR paper in 2007, and decided to focus my research on the immune system of bacteria. The seminar will discuss our studies towards the discovery and understanding of new defense systems, beyond CRISPR-Cas, that protect bacteria from phage infection.
