During development, the formation of tissues and organs entails both changes in cell shape and proliferation. Live-imaging has beautifully shown the exquisite coordination between these two processes that leads to the formation of tissues and organs with a given cell number and shape. During my talk, I will present our recent results on the interactions and feedback between morphogenesis and cell cycle progression. At the cellular level, I will show how cytokinesis forces are coordinated with the remodelling of the adherent junctions to ensure the maintenance and dynamics of epithelial cells. At the tissue scale, I will describe how global morphogenetic forces and cell geometry are integrated to regulate the cell numbers of tissues. These latter results stem from the development of recent interdisciplinary approaches providing a general framework for the study of cell division and tissue dynamics.
