Postdoctoral Research Assistant

Medical Research Council Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit
Job Reference:
Closing Date:

Grade 7 (£32,817 - £40,322)

Summary of Job Purpose and Principal Duties:

Therapeutically activating autophagy in vivo

We are seeking a talented postdoctoral fellow to be involved in the development of pharmacological activators of autophagy and to identify new biology in this area. Work will be carried out in the laboratory of Ian Ganley at the Medical Research Council’s Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (MRC-PPU) in Dundee. This is part of a unique academic-industrial collaboration led by Samsara Therapeutics.

Autophagy is a cell protective process and its dysregulation has been linked to many diseases, including cancer and neurodegeneration. Given this, autophagy-based therapies have now emerged as an attractive target area and the successful candidate will have the exciting opportunity to significantly contribute to developing such an approach. Using candidate autophagy-activating compounds, we will use state-of-the-art models that allow comparative analyses of autophagy and mitophagy in vivo (PMID: 27458135, 29337137, 34340748). With these, the successful candidate will utilise pharmacology and genetics, combined with high-resolution microscopy and biochemistry, to determine when and where autophagy and mitophagy are activated in vivo.

Candidate Requirements:

  • PhD with outstanding academic record and at least one first authored publication in a recognised peer-reviewed journal.
  • Strong background in animal models and cell biology would be beneficial.
  • Capable of working in a team, but able to plan and work independently.
  • Excellent communication skills and knowledge of the English language.

The position is initially available for 2 years. Salary will depend on experience, but the appointment will be made on the University's Grade 7 salary scale.

An appointment may be considered if you are shortly expected to be awarded a PhD. In this case the initial appointment would be made as a Research Assistant on the Training Grade 7 salary scale.
