Project: Untangling the DUBs and E3 ubiquitin ligases involved in misfolded proteins in neurodegenerative diseases.
The Sapkota lab within the Medical Research Council Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (MRC-PPU) is inviting applications for a postdoctoral position to unravel the E3 ubiquitin ligases and DUBs involved in the reversible ubiquitination of proteins that are misfolded in several neurodegenerative diseases. This project is part of a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary collaboration with Janssen Pharmaceutica NV based in Beerse in Belgium, aimed at harnessing ubiquitination to tackle pathological protein aggregates in neurodegenerative diseases. Progressive accumulation of misfolded protein aggregates is a hallmark of many age-related neurodegenerative disorders, which include Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease among others. These disorders affect millions of patients around the world and the incidences are set to increase further as the aging population rises globally. Despite our understanding of the pathogenesis and causes of many neurodegenerative diseases, conventional drug strategies have yielded no effective cures.
This interdisciplinary project aims to uncover E3 ubiquitin ligases and DUBs that regulate the reversible ubiquitination of misfolded proteins and establish the molecular mechanisms. The work will be done in conjunction with teams at Janssen pharmaceuticals.
The position is for 2.5 years, with a possibility of 6-month extension.
- PhD with an outstanding track record and at least one first authored publication in an internationally recognised peer-reviewed journal.
- Strong background in protein chemistry, mass spectrometry and bioinformatic tools for MS data analysis
- Strong background in ubiquitin signalling.
- Strong background in cell biology, molecular biology, and signal transduction.
- Knowledge of neurodegenerative diseases is desirable.
- Capable of working in a diverse team, but able to plan and work independently.
- Excellent communication skills and proficiency in English.
