The Division of Cell and Developmental Biology within the School of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee, consists of 8 research groups studying the regulation of differentiation in developing organisms, stem cells and adult tissues and how this is altered in disease states. Our work combines classical embryology and genetic approaches as well as mathematical modelling to understand gene regulation and function. A particular shared interest is in epithelial cell biology and this has led to our co-operative effort to maintain and develop state of the art imaging technologies in the “Tissue Imaging Centre”. The Division also hosts the Dundee Human Pluripotent Cell Facility, which provides quality controlled human pluripotent cells and training in their use. We benefit from expertise in the School-wide Imaging and Proteomics facilities as well as support from the Data Analysis Group and interactions with the MRC-PPU and in-house drug discovery platforms. There are over 80 different research groups in the School of Life Sciences. The School was ranked as the number 1 University Biological department in REF2014 and is consistently placed in the top 10 Institutes world-wide for citations per paper (QS World University Rankings).

Applications are sought from researchers seeking to start an independent group and also from established investigators to bring expertise and critical mass to our community. While we have broad interests in cell and developmental biology, we are keen to recruit researchers with interests in nervous system and/or human development, including stem cells and organoid approaches. We are also seeking cell biologists and bio-physicists with interests in signalling, trafficking and cell adhesion.

As an independent investigator you will be responsible for directing the research undertaken and for overseeing the activity and training of staff and students involved. 


Applicants will be expected to be competitive for personal fellowships and/or programme level grant support and have a strong publication record. Fellowship support is most readily obtained at the career development level and for such applicants we may be able to offer personal salary support for up to three years plus research costs, if required. Successful career development applicants will be provided with a starting package that covers a defined transition to tenure after 5-6 years. Typically, this package includes financial support for relocation expenses, an allocated studentship and purchase of essential start-up equipment. New researchers are supported by a structured mentoring programme that seeks to provide both project specific advice and guidance on establishing a strategy for long term funding. Combined with access to the excellent research facilities available in Dundee, we believe this provides a strong platform for the establishment of independent careers. We normally expect career development applicants to have completed up to 6 years postdoctoral work following from their PhD. However, any career break will be taken into consideration.

Summary of Skills, Experience and Qualifications

PhD and post-doctoral research in relevant subject (broadly in Cell & Developmental Biology, including Biophysics). Research interests and expertise in cell and biophysical approaches to understanding cell signalling and behaviour. Evidence of independent research abilities and clear vision of future research plans.
