Life and Biomedical Sciences Education (LABSe) within the School of Life Sciences, wishes to appoint a laboratory teaching technician who will provide a technical support service for undergraduate practical class teaching. 

Key Duties:

• As part of a technical support team you will be involved in the preparation, delivery and development of practical class sessions.
• Organise, set out and clear up practical class experiments.
• Where appropriate, give guidance and advice to junior members of the technical support team in Health and Safety, laboratory techniques and use of equipment.
• Help senior technicians to develop training session for other technicians within the team.
• Demonstrate and give advice to students during the practical classes on Health and Safety, laboratory techniques and use of equipment.
• Give advice on Health and Safety to personnel entering the laboratory and ensure compliance with Health and Safety regulations and laboratory rules are followed.
• Write and update risk assessments and chemical hazard databases
• Develop practical class protocols and trial experiments in conjunction with the services manager, deputy services manager, academic staff members and senior technicians.
• Write and amend technical methods for practical classes.
• Make purchasing recommendations for consumables, equipment and chemicals.
• Receipt delivery of goods and equipment where necessary
• Coordinate disposal of equipment and maintain records
• Ensure laboratories and preparation rooms are clean and tidy.
• Maintain, clean and repair equipment and laboratory apparatus.
• Removal of  waste from laboratories and organising disposal
• Any other duties required by School/ LABSe
• Some out of hours working required where necessary including Saturday masterclasses (eight session annually)

The duties of the post outlined above are not exhaustive, and the post holder will be expected to be cooperative and flexible, undertaking such other duties as may be reasonably required of a member of technical staff in the University.

Essentials:

• HNC in relevant science subject or equivalent
• Significant practical experience of working in a teaching laboratory
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Good organisational skills with ability to plan own workload
• Proven ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Knowledge of Health and Safety and working within Health & Safety guidelines
• Good numeracy skills
• Good computing skills
• Ability to work to tight deadlines and competing demands

Desirable:

• Full Driving licence
