The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) European Lead Factory is a major European project established with the aim of generating new lead structures for drug discovery projects in the public and private sectors. As part of this project a European Screening Centre (ESC) has been established and one key unit of the centre is located at Biocity Scotland, Newhouse, Lanarkshire. This unit will be responsible for hit characterisation, medicinal chemistry and compound logistics for the centre. Staffed by scientists from the University of Dundee the hit characterisation and medicinal chemistry groups will follow up on active compounds for public programs discovered by high throughput screening of the new compound collection assembled for the purpose. The desired output will be improved high quality hits that represent excellent starting points for drug discovery programs or tools for investigating and validating novel pharmacological approaches with the ultimate aim of creating benefit for patients.

Job description:

The European Screening Centre at Newhouse is now recruiting for a highly motivated analyst to join the chemistry team. Reporting to a chemistry team leader at Newhouse, the successful candidates will be experienced and dynamic scientists. They will be able to demonstrate an outstanding track record of success and ability in analyzing chemical compounds using a variety of methods but especially using LC-MS and NMR.

Main duties and responsibilities:

• Analyzing compounds either produced in the laboratory or samples identified by high throughput screening using appropriate techniques such as NMR, LC-MS and HPLC. Expertise in the use of LC-MS will be particularly valuable.
• Setting up and ensuring analytical equipment is maintained to a high standard
• Following safe working practices, complying with appropriate legislation and keeping appropriate laboratory records

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate and possess the following:

• A first or second degree in chemistry or equivalent.
• Normally at least 4 years’ experience working in drug discovery either in academia or industry is essential.
• Excellent knowledge of the principles of analytical chemistry with a track record of conducting analyses, interpreting results and showing initiative.
• The ability to analyse and run appropriate spectroscopic and chromatographic methods to demonstrate purity and identity of samples e.g. LC-MS, NMR.
• Hands-on experience of data systems to support laboratory operations.
• Experience in ensuring equipment is maintained to a high standard, working with other members of staff and suppliers to ensure ambitious targets are met.
• A flexible approach to their work and be able to turn their hands to many activities in the lab with a commitment to quality and scientific excellence.
• A team player, an excellent communicator, enthusiastic, highly motivated, a committed laboratory worker with a passion for analytical chemistry.
• Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.

This is a fixed-term position of 3 years' duration.
