Over 50 undergraduate students have been undertaking life science summer projects within the University over the past few months. They presented their research projects at the Annual Summer School Symposium that took place on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th August.

The Schools of Life Sciences and Medicine are delighted to host eight of our undergraduate students who are undertaking Medical Research Scotland funded vacation scholarships with researchers in the Schools. These scholarships have the additional challenge of requiring the PI and student to apply for funding together.
Following on from the University wide announcement about Dundee’s overall success in the National Student Survey 2019, further details at the subject level have now been revealed. Our Biological and Biomedical Sciences programmes have again improved in position across our degrees offered through the Schools of Life Sciences and Medicine, recording an increase in overall satisfaction to a new high of 94%.
The University of Dundee has been ranked 4th among UK universities for overall student satisfaction in the 2019 National Student Survey (NSS). The University recorded overall satisfaction of 90%, up 2% on the 2018 result and well above the sector average of 84%, and was ranked 2nd in Scotland.
The University of Dundee’s renowned comics artists and writers have produced a new publication raising awareness of the serious and much misunderstood autoimmune condition coeliac disease. ‘Understanding Coeliac Disease’ will be launched on Thursday 16 May to mark Coeliac Disease Awareness Week. The 24-page comic seeks to make more people aware of what it is like to live with coeliac disease, the only treatment for which is a strict life-long gluten free diet.
Professor Hari Hundal and Dr Sarah McKim were named winners in their respective categories in the Dundee University Student Association (DUSA) Student-led Teaching Awards on Friday night.
Hari jointly won in the Most Inspirational Teaching category while Sarah won the Best Postgraduate Supervisor category.
The shortlisted nominees (from over 300 nominations) and the students who nominated attended the Student Led Teaching Awards Dinner last Friday, where the winners were announced.
The Complete University Guide announced their rankings for 2020 today. Our Biological Sciences courses have climbed two places from their 2019 to be placed 4th in the UK (1st in Scotland) this year.
Dundee’s wider strengths across the life and medical sciences are also recognised with the University in the UK top five for Forensic Science (1st), Dentistry (2nd), Anatomy (4th) and Medicine (5th).
Dr Stephen Kelley has joined the School as a lecturer in pharmacology as part of the D’Arcy Thompson Unit. Stephen has built up extensive research and teaching experience through-out his career at institutions in the US and UK.
Latest research from Professor Kim Dale and collaborators has uncovered further knowledge into the developmental segmentation process which may also impact on our understanding of diseases such as cancer. This research was published this week in EMBO Reports.
