CLS Impact and Outreach

The College of Life Sciences is delighted to announce the launch of the Innovator of the Year Award (2010)

This new award is to recognise a member of CLS at any career-level or a team within CLS that has demonstrably achieved scientific, technical or commercial innovation that has come to fruition in 2010.

Nominations can be made by an individual or by a group by 31st December 2010.

The winner will be announced at the 2010 CLS Review of the Year in January 2011 and will receive a cheque for £500.

The College of Life Sciences is a participant in the BBSRC's Excellence with Impact award

This award acknowledges university departments that are most active in embedding a culture that recognises the importance of economic and social impact alongside excellent research.

Selected departments are being monitored over a period of two years from 1 December 2008 to 1 December 2010.

Two prizes will be awarded to:

Professor Ron Hay awarded the Novartis Medal 2012

Congratulations to Professor Ron Hay, the recipient of the 2012 Novartis Medal and Prize. This is the third consecutive year that the Novartis Prize has been awarded to a CLS scientist; Angus Lamond was the recipient of the prize for 2011 and Grahame Hardie in 2010. Previous winners of the Prize from the College of Life Sciences also include Sir Philip Cohen who gave the Novartis Medal Lecture in Warwick in 1992.

CLS Scientist wins Wellcome Image Award

The Wellcome Image Awards 2011 were announced at a ceremony at the Wellcome Collection in London on Wednesday, 23rd February 2011. The 21 winning images are the most visually striking, technically excellent and informative images that have been acquired by the Wellcome Images picture library in the past sixteen months. Among the 21 winning images was Chromosome lifetime map by the Wellcome Trust Centre for Gene Regulation and Expressions’ David Lleres.

Alan Fairlamb elected to the Council of the Academy of the Medical Sciences

Professor Alan Fairlamb, head of the Division of Biological Chemistry and Drug Discovery at the Collge of Life Sciences has been elected to the Council of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Professor Fairlamb has been a Fellow of the Academy since 2005; his Council post will take effect after the Academy’s AGM today, Thursday 18 November 2010. As a part of his Council duties Professor Fairlamb will attend all Academy Council meetings and the admission ceremony for New Fellows.

The Innovator of the Year Award
A new award recognising the achievements of a member or a team within SLS that has demonstrably achieved scientific, technical or commercial innovation, delivering results in the award year.

Primitive Streak

'Fashioning Science to create a new way of understanding the origins of human life'

CLS PI Kate Storey and her sister, artist and designer Helen Storey are taking their boundary-breaking collaboration Primitive Streak on a nation-wide tour including Sheffiled, Newcastle and London.
