MSc Human Anatomy

This innovative one-year taught Masters programme in Human Anatomy provides a solid foundation in human anatomy as a basis for teaching as well as basic and applied research. It considers all aspects of gross anatomy through direct examination focusing on the study of human gross anatomy through direct examination and contextualisation.

As well as gross anatomy the programme includes embryology relevant to an understanding of human structure, the clinical and surgical relevance of anatomy, neuroanatomy, and anatomical techniques employed in the preservation and preparation of human material for teaching and research. The programme has a strong practical component supplemented by lectures, small group discussions and tutorials.

Students will develop subject-specific, key transferable and research skills through coursework assignments and a research dissertation, which will be undertaken in an area directly related to anatomy education in the form of the development of learning and teaching material or on an aspect of clinical and/or surgical anatomy.

The MSc in Human Anatomy has been developed to provide postgraduate training in human anatomy and is intended for students graduating from life science and related disciplines who wish to extend their knowledge of anatomy and/or who wish to pursue a career in the anatomical sciences. The primary aim of the programme is to educate and train individuals in human gross anatomy. The programme will be delivered using a combination of traditional methods and guided self-directed learning in which students use and develop transferable and subject-specific skills. The programme fulfils the requirements of a higher degree by ensuring that the students possess autonomy early in their studies to maximise their interests and develop new skills.

The programme has been designed to provide a framework within which students can study by considering the theoretical and practical aspects of the subject. It is an attractive option for individuals wishing to improve their knowledge and practical skills in human gross anatomy, particularly with a view to pursuing an academic career in anatomy. Graduates from this programme will be encouraged to undertake further study in the anatomical sciences.

The international origin of students, as well as the mix of recent and experienced graduates, will provide a dynamic learning environment for the development of ideas within the field of anatomy education. The programme will provide a focus for human gross anatomy training and a foundation for basic, clinical and surgical anatomy research.

There is a lack of qualified anatomists worldwide. The University of Dundee is the only institute in the UK specifically offering postgraduate education and training in human gross anatomy. The Masters programme in Human Anatomy is run by the College of Life Sciences and commences in September. The programme is capped at 20 students, who will benefit from a recently refurbished anatomy laboratory and access to human material. Instruction will be by staff experienced in teaching gross anatomy and active in research.
