As requests for websites / web hosting increases, it is appropriate for the College to define to what level we will support each site and how requests for new sites will be handled. All requests for new sites will be submitted to the College Web Development Committee for approval prior to work commencing.
Any request for a website that will not be part of the new College website (including the new design), will be subject to a service level agreement with the College’s web development service. Requests will be categorised depending on the following criteria. All sites will be expected to adhere to the University’s web accessibility policy and follow its guide to best practice.
Sites that can only be viewed from within the main College complex will be deemed to be internal facing sites.
Sites that can be accessed from outside the main College complex will be deemed to be external sites and will be subject to more rigorous guidelines.
Depending on which area your site falls into will depend on what standard is expected.
Internal only sites will not be subject to design guidelines, but are expected to adhere to the University’s web accessibility policy and follow its guide to best practice.
Sites that are externally accessibly must adhere to the University’s web accessibility policy and follow its guide to best practice. Designs should also be of a suitably high standard that reflects the quality and excellence with which we as a College are associated and are keen to promote.
These packages can apply to both internal and externally facing sites. All service level agreements are subject to The Web Development Service Terms and Conditions. All package costs are one off costs. Support required over and above the level specified in each package will incur further costs.
The Web Development Service will setup the hosting of this site and ensure it can be reached via a web address. The Web Development Service cannot help with developing or maintaining web pages, custom scripting or installing third party software. Installation of third party software must be discussed with web development prior to installation.
Suitable for labs
The Web Development Service will meet with the customer to gain an understanding of their needs and develop a structure for the site. Once this has been agreed and content supplied, a custom template will be designed for the site. The template will be HTML and CSS based and will not include any elements that require any kind of scripting. Once this template has been signed off, content that has previously been supplied will be transferred onto the template, up to a maximum of 15 pages. All content must be supplied by the customer and must be in electronic format (i.e. word document, image files, etc). Pages required over and above this will incur further charges. Maintenance of the site will be handed over to the customer once completed with appropriate training supplied.
Suitable for divisions and resource units
The Web Development Service will meet with the customer to gain an understanding of their needs. Once the structure of the site has been agreed and content supplied, a custom template will be designed for the site. The template will be HTML and CSS and comply with accessibility standards. If required by the customer, custom scripting can be added in order to enhance the user’s experience. Once this template has been signed off, content that has previously been supplied will be transferred onto the template, up to a maximum of 40 pages. Pages required over and above this will incur further charges. Support will be given for simple updates, that don’t require major recoding, as required. This is available for an unlimited number of requests on existing pages up to 1 year. Additional pages can be added up to the package maximum.
Ongoing support is only available in the Gold Package for the stated period. It is expected that once sites are setup on the CMS that the customer will take over the updating of the site.
For sites taking the Gold Package, help will only be given with textual changes to the site. Any work that involves major restructuring or recoding will incur further charges.
Sites hosted on the CMS will be able to make use of “CMS Drop in Clinics” where they can come along and have their questions answered. Problems arising out with these times should be submitted via the Life Science Computing helpdesk and will be addressed as time permits.
