Connecting to file shares from Windows 7/Vista

If you are using a personal Windows 7 or Windows Vista machine you may find that it does not by default allow you to access network file shares.

LSC supplied Windows 7 machines do not require any of these modifications.

Windows 7

  • Run (Windows Key + R) "regedit"
  • Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa"
  • If "LmCompatibilityLevel" is missing:
    • Right-Click on "LSA" in the folders window on the left
    • Select Edit \ New \ "DWORD (32 bit)" Value \
    • Name this "LmCompatibilityLevel"
  • Double-click "LmCompatibilityLevel"
  • Set the value to "1"
  • Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0"
  • Double-click "NtlmMinClientSec"
  • Set the value to "0"
  • Double-click "NTLMMinServerSec"
  • Set the value to "0"
  • Close down regedit and reboot

Windows Vista

Please note that Windows Vista is not supported, however you should be able to connect to file shares as follows:

  • Run (Windows Key + R) "secpol.msc"
  • Navigate to "Local Policies" -> "Security Options"
  • Change the value of the policy "Network Security - LAN Manager authentication level" from "NTLMv2 responses only" to "LM and NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated"
