Data Backup and Archive

Aim

LSC aim to provide a sufficient capability to supply demand for data storage research needs. LSC aim to ensure integrity of that data and build resilience into the backup configuration where technically and economically possible.

ICS aim to provide a backup for staff / student general purpose teaching storage and email.

Service Description

The backup system contains the following elements:

  • IBM 3584 Tape Libraries with LTO Tape Drives
  • Storage Area Network Switches
  • IBM AIX servers running Tivoli Storage Manager
  • TSM Client software

The backup service is available either as part of the Managed Storage service or as an additional service for client devices.

The following client devices are supported

  • Windows XP (i386)
  • Windows 2003 Server (i386)
  • RedHat Enterprise Linux / Centos Linux versions 4 and 5 (i386 and x86_64)
  • Mac OS X 10.4 (PPC and x86)

LSC will monitor the backup clients and provide a notification to the system owner that the system has failed to backup. The costs of the backup service are as follows:

  • a single workstation backup license is £100 per annum with storage usage above 50GB being charged at £0.25 per GB per annum.
  • Managed storage now includes backup costs in the pricing.

User Responsibilities

  • To exercise caution when deleting files.
  • To provide as much detail as possible concerning files deleted in error.
  • Report failures of backup clients to LSC help desk for investigation if the reason is not apparent (system being shutdown for example).

Service Targets

  • Ensure integrity of the data.
  • Ensure daily incremental backups initially to disk and then to two tape storage pools.
  • Aim to respond to requests for restoring files within one day and to effect restore within 3 days where possible. Up to 14 versions of files are retained for up to 60 days and at least 2 versions of deleted files are retained for 180 days.
