LIFESCI-AD

What is it, and what does it mean to me?

The current domain in use, LIFESCI, is not capable of handling Windows 7 computers. Therefore, Life Sciences Computing has created a new domain, called LIFESCI-AD, using Microsoft Active Directory. This new domain can accept Windows 7, XP (and their server equivalents), Apple Macs and even Linux computers.

Before you can use a Windows 7 computer for the first time, your LIFESCI user account details need to be copied over to a new LIFESCI-AD account with the same user name. For security purposes, your password will need to be reset once at the helpdesk in order to activate your LIFESCI-AD account. From that point onwards, you will have a LIFESCI and a LIFESCI-AD account with the same user name and passwords. Whenever you change your password in the future from the LSD portal, it will be updated on both domains.

What does it mean for Life Sciences Computing?

Active Directory allows LSC to bring a more consistent and secure experience across the Windows machines. For instance:

  • Shortcuts to your network shares can be applied centrally and will follow you regardless of the computer you logon to
  • Computers within a group will automatically be given access to their relevant printers (lab/division)
  • Wireless network settings can be deployed pre-configured to laptops and updated automatically
  • Security settings can be applied at a short notice in order to migitate a risk of infection

Over time, applications will also be automatically deployed and updated on a computer group basis.
