Wireless Network

Aim

A Wireless Network is available at selected points throughout the College, allowing staff and students to connect equipment to the network for College work.

Service Description

For College staff and students, wireless devices connect to the Network allowing access to network resources. The wireless connection is encrypted using the WPA2 Enterprise standard, providing the strongest enterprise-class encryption currently available.

Support is provided for LSC standard systems only. Support cannot be provided for non-standard systems. Support is provided for the Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OSX desktop operating systems. Documentation is available from posters in wireless areas, the LSC web pages and Helpdesk.

For guests, wireless devices connect using a WPA2 PSK password. The password is changed on a monthly basis and is distributed via Divisional Secretaries and Reception. The guest network allows full Internet access over an encrypted connection. There is no access to private College resources from this network.

Wireless Access Points can be purchased from LSC to provide wireless network coverage in your area.

We participate in the Janet eduroam Roaming Service.

User Responsibilities

  • Ensure that personal equipment is maintained up-to-date with operating system and applications patches and updates.
  • Ensure that an up-to-date virus checker is installed.
  • Report any problems to LSC as they occur, with as much information as possible.
  • Read and comply with the Wireless and Mobile Connection Policy.

Service Targets

  • Endeavour to ensure that the Network under its control is available for use at all advertised times.
  • Aim to respond to reported faults on the Wireless Network within 2 hours during staffed periods.
