Remote Access VPN (Virtual Private Network)

Aim

To provide convenient and secure access to network resources to authorised users working out with the College buildings.

Service Description

A Remote Access VPN (Virtual Private Network) service is offered and may be used to establish a secure connection to the College Network. Support and documentation is provided for the Cisco Systems VPN Client software on Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OSX desktop operating systems. Network support cannot be provided for clients located out with the University's Network as we have no authority and no ability to troubleshoot problems due to intermediate ISPs (Internet Service Providers). Once a Remote Access VPN connection is established, users may connect to network file shares and access resources validating against IP address.

User Responsibilities

  • Users must be running the latest supported VPN client software and connection profile.
  • Users must follow all the available documentation before reporting problems.
  • Users must quote their username when requesting help.

Service Targets

  • Endeavour to ensure that the Remote Access VPN service is available for use at all times.
  • Essential hardware and software activities that require interruptions of the service to all or part of the network will usually be carried out on Tuesday mornings between 07:00 and 09:00, though urgent work may be carried out at other times. If possible notice will be given not later than noon on the preceding day. In emergencies the service may be interrupted at any time without notice.
  • Provide support to users encountering problems with the client software and connection profile. Users may be asked to bring in their equipment if it is not practical or efficient to carry out tasks requested over the telephone.
