Software Deployment

Aim

LSC aim to provide a mechanism for installing software on workstations and servers as required by staff.

Service Description

LSC can package and deploy new software onto individual workstations as required by staff. Only workstations using managed desktops can benefit from the software deployment solutions. Personal Laptops or devices not running the managed desktop cannot benefit from this service. While there is technical variation in tools used on the different platforms (Windows,Mac and Linux) the overall goals of the service remain the same.

Mac Deployment

Mac software distribution is implemented with munki Managed Software Update and Apple Remote Desktop, pushing vendor-supplied installers and disk images or in-house generated installer packages.

See entry on Software Installed As Standard on Mac Desktop for a list of current software.

Windows Deployment

Windows currently uses a blend of two solutions for deploying software. Core applications are automatically deployed via Group Policy for computer joined to the domain LIFESCI-AD. Other applications are handled using OCS which is an agent based service that downloads packages over HTTPS and then installs onto a workstation

The current packages available for deployment are as follows:
Software available for the Windows platform

Linux Deployment

Linux comes with a significant number of packages ready. LSC maintain local repositories of the supported Linux distribution Centos via https://mrepo.lifesci.dundee.ac.uk/

Manual Deployment

As a last resort manual deployment of software to workstation class machines can be affected however as the time involved is significant this is often better delegated to a Divisional or Group based Resident Expert.

User Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all software requested is licensed.
  • Provide license and media or download location for new software.
  • Provide equipment numbers for machines to receive software package.
