Accessing Shared Drive / Web Access

Alfresco can provide a number of means of access to the content repository where you will store your data. The first is a familar “mapped drive” that looks similar to how you would view your files in Windows / Mac. The second is through an easy to use web interface. Whichever way you use, you are accessing exactly the same files and folders.

Shared Drive

To be able to map a drive to Alfresco, you will need to have a valid Life Sciences username and password. If you do not have one of these, then register here for one.

Windows

  1. Open “My Computer” by either clicking on the icon on your desktop, or by right clicking the start button and choosing “Explore”.
  2. Choose “Tools” from the menu bar at the top, then “Map Network Drive”.
  3. Choose whichever drive letter you wish to map the drive to (any will do, as long as it hasn't already been taken).
  4. In the “Folder” box type \\alfresco.lifesci.dundee.ac.uk\alfresco
  5. Click OK.
  6. If it asks you for a username and password, then use your Lifesciences Directory Username and Password.

Mac

Mac users should follow the normal procedure for mapping a drive but use the following path instead.

  • smb://alfresco.lifesci.dundee.ac.uk/alfresco

What You Will See

  • You will see a number of folders presented to you. For the most part, the only one you are interested in is the one labelled “Sites”. Double click on that folder.
  • As Alfresco Share has a number of function, you'll see a number of different folders that represent different functionality (e.g. blogs, calendar, etc). The one you will be most interested in is "documentLibrary".
  • Double click on "documentLibrary" and you will see files and folders as presented in the web interface.
  • Exactly what you will be able to do will depend on the access rights that have been granted to you. Generally speaking most people will be able to read/write on all files in an area they have access to.

Web Access

To access the Alfresco system using a web browser, follow these instructions.

  1. Open your preferred browser and type in https://alfresco.lifesci.dundee.ac.uk/share
  2. Type in your Life Sciences Username and Password.

For users external to the College who are trying to use the Alfresco Share system, please use the username and password provided in the Invitation Email.
