Tue, 08/12/2015 - 10:10

On Monday 7 December at 9.24 a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack caused unplanned disruption on the Janet network. Today we are seeing similar conditions. This is resulting in a potentially intermittent service for all customers. Janet network and computer security incident response teams (CSIRT) are currently working to resolve the problem.

This is impacting internet access including Box, Office3655/Outlook and other online services. Internal systems currently are not affected.

Janet Network Operations Centre (NOC) engineers working closely with CSIRT are implementing measures to reduce or stop the impact of these attacks. Each takes time to identify and to apply effective blocks.  Once the blocks are applied the attack is brought under control but when this is spotted by the perpetrators the dynamics of the attacks change.

Janet are continuing to work and respond to the attacks and implement the least possible disruption to sites.

Thu, 03/12/2015 - 09:40

We are currently experiencing issues with office 365. This means that you may experience problems accessing email via outlook and webmail. UOD IT are currently working with microsoft to resolve these issues.

Fri, 02/10/2015 - 10:10

Starting this morning, after pressing Control+Alt+Delete you will no longer see the policy notice where you had to click Ok to accept.

The primary reason for this change is in order to line up with the University's Staff Desktop setup, where it is no longer shown either. Is it however displayed on the Student Desktop.

Please bear in mind that although it is not shown, you are still contractually bound to observe the following policies:

Tue, 22/09/2015 - 10:00

An issue was reported on the 25th August, stating that access to www.cellsignal.com and www.phosphosite.org was not possible while on campus (but worked from home or on 3G).

The standard change to apply for this scenario did not work, and after a couple of unsuccessful attempts the Problems team gathered and logged a call with McAfee, the vendor for the University's Next Generation Firewall.

After some upgrades and rule changes to adjust best practices, access to these websites was resumed on the 16th September, and McAfee is further investigating the behaviour of the rule set that was in place.

The techy bit from McAfee:

"The URL filter situation matches to the connection, but it still apparently goes to categorization. Categorization (Web filtering) typically splits TCP segments containing a HTTP request into two and some web servers do not accept "GET" in two packets. The reason is likely that there is rules with BC categories in the inspection policy before the allow rule with the URL filter situation."

Mon, 07/09/2015 - 16:15

The license server is fully functional again, apologies for the downtime.

Mon, 07/09/2015 - 10:30

A component of the Aida license server has become unavailable. As a result, it is not possible to use Aida Image Analyzer at this time.

We are investigating this as a high priority.

Thank you for your patience.

Fri, 07/08/2015 - 12:45 - 13:45

The Mascot server (mascot.proteomics.dundee.ac.uk) is experiencing severe performance issues owing to problems processing very large searches. It appears to be owing to the server VM's allocated RAM being inadequate and, accordingly, we are increasing the VM's allocated memory. This requires rebooting the server, as a result of which Mascot may be unavailable for a period of 10 minutes. Further restarts may be required if further resources are required. Please bear with us.

Wed, 15/07/2015 - 12:50

Adobe has released an update for Flash which fixes a number of "zero-day" exploits, i.e. malware already exists to exploit these vulnerabilities. Firefox and Chrome are already blocking unpatched versions of Flash.

The update has been patched and released for both Windows desktops (restart required) as well as Mac Desktops (those with the Self Service app).

A number of server also have Flash installed; as a result, it is our intention to update them all tonight, out with our regular maintenance window.

If you access a Windows server where the name is prefixed with "TS-", please save your work and log off from it by end of play today, as they will be updated between 21:30 and midnight.

Tue, 07/07/2015 - 09:30 - 09:35

On Tuesday 7th July at 09:30, we will be enabling two new WiFi authentication servers.

All users of UoD_WiFi will be affected by this change and will be prompted to accept the new certificate on their devices.

The certificate will look something like this:

aaaa

The actual screen will be dependent on the device you are using.

You should not be asked to enter your username or password again, but if so, please use your normal University username and password.

In the first instance if you are unable to connect, please disconnect from the UoD_WiFi and attempt a reconnect.

This change is to enable us to improve our security by decommissioning some obsolete servers and replacing them with new ones.

If you have any queries regarding this change, please contact the IT Service Desk quoting change number 706.

Fri, 22/05/2015 - 16:40

There is an ongoing issue for those who use Filemaker Go with filemaker.lifesci.dundee.ac.uk on their iPads.

If you have the latest version installed (13.0.9), then you are unable to access to the server.

As a result, we need to install an update on the Filemaker server outwith the usual maintenance window.

Could you please ensure that you have closed your sessions to Filemaker before going home tonight; I intend to update the server after 9.30pm; the server should be offline for no more than 1 hour. If you do need to use Filemaker during that time, please get in touch at the earliest opportunity.

Please note that after the update, you must use the latest version of Filemaker Go.

Wed, 25/03/2015 - 13:40

Also, it appears that some student accounts are incorrectly shown as locked, this is being fixed.

Wed, 07/01/2015 - 07:00 - 09:00

Maintenance on this server is complete. It had to be restarted first in order to clear the issues with some of the services, and then Windows Updates have been applied to it. Behaviour seems back to normal now, but if you still have issues please log a call with the CLS IT Helpdesk.

Mon, 05/01/2015 - 17:15 - 17:50

The web publishing component of FileMaker 12 Server stopped working today at 17:15. Normal service was resumed at 17:50 by restarting this component. If you are having problems accessing the databases via a web browser please let us know by logging a support ticket.

Mon, 05/01/2015 - 09:15

Update: The issue has now been resolved and sites should be back in working order. Please contact the IT helpdesk if you are having any problems.

If you are using Filemaker and KeyServer denies you to access it, please get in touch with the CLS IT Helpdesk.

Wed, 10/12/2014 - 14:35

KeyServer has been updated to version 7.2.0.5, in order to fix some stability issues and a small memory leak.

Client update to follow.

Sun, 16/11/2014 - 00:00 - Mon, 17/11/2014 - 11:00

The SSL certificate had expired for the Remote Desktop Gateway servers, which led to a disruption of service. Although a request had been put through to renew the certificate, there had been issues obtaining the updated one.

A self-signed certificate was put in place on Sunday evening as a temporary measure.

New certificates were obtained on Monday morning and service was resumed shortly after.

Thu, 13/11/2014 - 21:50 - 22:00

Further to the announcement this morning, the Cryodepository database has been successfully migrated to the FileMaker 12 server and the version 11 database has been decommissioned.

Wed, 12/11/2014 - 09:00 - 10:25

The SLT share appears to be unavailable. We are currently investing this issue as a matter of urgency.

Service is now available. Outage was due to a hardware failure. A work around has been applied to get the service running again. Hardware changes are scheduled for the next at risk period (Tuesday 18th November, 7-9am).

Tue, 04/11/2014 - 21:00 - 23:00

KeyServer, the Software Asset Management application that we use, has been updated to version 7.2.

As well as support for newer Operating Systems, the majority of benefits are from a backend perspective with better reporting and monitoring.

Tue, 28/10/2014 - 12:20 - Wed, 29/10/2014 - 09:00

It appears that the 2X servers are no longer redirecting the local printers. As a result, when you try to print from an application opened on 2X you are advised that there are no printers available.

We are currently investigating the issue.

[update 29.10.2014] This issue is now fixed. One of the servers was playing up, so traffic has been redirected to the other server, allowing to reboot it with minimal service disruption.

Tue, 07/10/2014 - 07:00 - 09:00

The SILAC servers on silac.lifesci.dundee.ac.uk have been decommissioned in favour of a single server with added RAM and disk space.

This new server is also 64-bit, which allows us to install the latest version of MaxQuant (the old favourite 1.3.0.5 is also available).

Please note that the domain name for this server is LIFESCI-AD (it was LIFESCI on the old one).

Mac users are recommended to use the latest Microsoft Remote Desktop Client version 8.

Mon, 29/09/2014 - 09:20

The main web servers were patched over the weekend in response to the ShellShock bug that has recently been discovered. Unfortunately this seems to have introduced some kind of instability into the server that powers many of the sites in CLS (Main Life Sciences site, OSAR site, etc). We have been working over the weekend to address this and it appears to be stable for the time being. We are continuing to monitor the situation. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Wed, 24/09/2014 - 10:20

We are having continuing problems with our main aegir node going to 100% CPU usage around 5am each morning and therefore denying connections. This appears to be an issue with the servers internal page caching systems that kick off around this time. We have carried out some work this morning to hopefully remedy the situation and will monitor it closely going forward to ensure it has remedied the situation.

Fri, 01/08/2014 - 13:30

Fri, 20/06/2014 - 17:00

We will be performing some upgrades to our main College webserver from 5pm this evening. For the most part this work should not be service affecting, but may cause some websites to go down towards the end of the work. This work will take several hours to complete, but everything should be back to normal by Saturday morning.

Thu, 19/06/2014 - 14:15

The process that normally runs on Alfresco to sync user accounts between Alfresco and our directory services seemed to get stuck and fail to run. A reboot of the Alfresco process fixed this. Only users that had recently changed their passwords were affected.

Thu, 19/06/2014 - 09:10

Our aegir master control server went down overnight. The system was reboot at 6:50 and normal service was resumed. Main college and school sites continued without interruption.

Mon, 09/06/2014 - 10:20

TrueCrypt, a free Open Source program which enables the encryption of internal and external drives, has recently been discontinued. Furthermore, it is also undergoing a security audit.

http://truecrypt.sourceforge.net/

Up until recently, TrueCrypt has been recommended by CLS IT for encrypting external drives being shared between Mac and Windows computers.

In light of recent event however, we can no longer recommend its use.

For the time being we are strongly recommending to move off TrueCrypt and use BitLocker (Windows) or FileVault (Mac) until further notice.

Please note that IT Suites on campus will not read an external drive or USB pen unless it is BitLocker encrypted.

Thu, 05/06/2014 - 12:35

The faulty cable to the projector in the WTB1 meeting room has now been repaired and all facilities in this room are now functioning as normal.

Wed, 04/06/2014 - 10:50

There was a short disruption to traffic served by one of our aegir servers at 10:48am during some routine maintenance to our master aegir server. This triggered a reverification of all sites hosted on the server causing high traffic. Service was restored by 10:53am.

Fri, 30/05/2014 - 14:55

There is a fault with the VGA cable to projector in WTB1 meeting room when used with external laptops, resulting in  a pink hue. This will be repaired or replaced as soon as possible. The fixed computer in this room is not affected and can be used as normal.

Mon, 12/05/2014 - 14:50

It is with great pleasure we announce that the Life Sciences site was awarded the "Best Website" award at the Scottish Drupal Awards at the weekend. Thanks to all the team who have put so much effort into it and to everyone who has contributed content and worked with us.

Wed, 23/04/2014 - 12:30

I am currently in the process of migrating the DeployStudio AFP share to a Life Sci Samba share.  The reason for this was performance and storage hosted locally on the Mac Server would eventually become poor.  Migrating over to the network storage allows us for better performance, backups and more stability.

Mon, 14/04/2014 - 12:50

We have had a number of requests regarding the search facility not working in Office365 Webmail whilst using Safari or Chrome on their Apple Mac's.  At the moment a call as been raised with Microsoft and the interim fix is to use Google Chrome.

You can find Google Chrome in the optional tab on the Managed Software Update.  /Applications/Utilities/Managed Software Update.app

Thu, 27/02/2014 - 11:55

Due to the amount of software versions we have on our server, we spent some time removing some of the rentition copies to free up some space on the box.  For example, we had the last 6x versions of Adobe Flash and it was pointless to have so many copies when we only require the most recent up to date.  The Munki repo is now much cleaner and easier to navigate around.

Core

  • Munki - v1.0

Optional

  • CCP4 Program Suite, ARP/wARP - 6.4
  • ChemBioDraw - 13.0.2
  • Firefox - 27

  • XQuartz - 2.7.54
Wed, 19/02/2014 - 14:05

We have upgraded our OSX Server from 10.8 to 10.9 which ran smoothly this morning.  This update was not critical or beneficial although we felt that it was best to remain up to date with the latest security releases that Apple make available.

From the 8th April 2014 Windows XP will become “End of Life”, which means that Microsoft will stop releasing security patches for it.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/help/what-does-end-of-support-mean

In the College, Windows 7 has been the default supported desktop for the last 3 years, so there aren’t many XP machines left.

However, over time they will become an increasing potential security risk. As a result, we intend to perform an audit of the remaining ones, and assess them, e.g.

  • Is there a business case for keeping the machine?
  • If yes, can it be upgraded to Windows 7?
  • Does the machine require to be connected to the network?

In the meantime, if you do have a Windows XP machine and wish to explore its migration options, please log a ticket at the usual place:

http://www.lifesci.dundee.ac.uk/facilities/computing-support-services/log-it-support-request

Tue, 28/01/2014 - 07:00 - 09:00

The Remote Desktop Server TS-BCDD has been updated with the following software:

  • Java Runtime 7.51
  • TopSpin 3.2
  • StarDrop 5.5
Tue, 21/01/2014 - 09:00

The license server has been successfully migrated, with minimal disconnection time.

Using an existing installation of CLC Main Workbench worked successfully.

Tue, 21/01/2014 - 07:00 - 09:00

With the impending release of CLC Main Workbench version 7 (http://www.clcbio.com/products/latest-improvements-main-workbench/), it is necessary to make a small update to the license server.

This will be done tomorrow morning during the maintenance period (7am-9am). There will be a brief period where the license server won’t be contactable.

Fri, 03/01/2014 - 19:30

We have applied updates across our production aegir servers. Further work will take place in the coming weeks to finish migrating sites to the new servers as well as deploying a new development environment. We have also upgraded our aegir management system to the latest version as well.

Any problems should be reported to the CLS helpdesk using the form at http://www.lifesci.dundee.ac.uk/services/lsc/support

If you have any computer related problems then we would kindly ask you to log a support call so we can assign one of our specialists to look into your query further.
