Investigating the roles of Phytophthora infestans virulence factors in promoting late blight disease

Phytophthora infestans is the cause of potato blight disease. It is one of more than a 100 Phytophthora species that cause devastating diseases of food crops and trees. Our group are studying RXLR effector proteins from P. infestans that enter host plant cells and suppress immunity. We are studying how these proteins are delivered into plants, where they go inside the plant cell, what they interact with and how their activities alter plant processes to the benefit of the pathogen. This project can be tailored to the interests of the applicant to explore in details any of these areas of effector study.
