How long will the building take to complete?
-
Construction is projected to start in June 2012 and will be completed by the end of 2013.
How much will it cost and where will the money come from?
-
The construction of the CTIR will cost about £12.5 million. £11.4 million has been raised towards the project so far and we hope to shortly confirm a further donation of £1.1 million.
Will the CTIR be connected to the existing College of Life Sciences buildings?
-
The new CTIR building is self contained and will be connected to the North Side of the Wellcome Trust Building
Will there be any communal interaction space in the new building?
-
A new enclosed ‘street’ will be formed between the Wellcome Trust building and CTIR. This will house a reception for the CTIR and provide a pleasant area for coffee and informal meetings to encourage scientific and social interaction.
How many people will work in the CTIR?
-
From the outset the facility will have the a capacity to house about 100 research and support staff, with a total capacity of about 180 when the upper floors are developed.
What will happen to parking arrangements?
-
Construction of the CTIR will result in the loss of car parking spaces North of the WTB/JBC complex however additional parking spaces will be available a short walk away at West Henderson Wynd. Full details of parking arrangements can be found our construction update leaflet.
What will happen to access to the Wellcome Trust building during construction of the CTIR?
- During construction, access to the WTB, MSI and JBC buildings will alter.
The attached plan illustrates the changes which, in summary, will comprise
of the following:
- MSI (Entrance 1) – this entrance will remain open, and a ramp for wheelchair users is to be constructed and automatic door openers installed. As planning permission is still awaited for the ramp, it is unlikely that it will be completed by the time the CTIR works commence, however, temporary wheelchair access will be provided via the Division of Mathematics entrance (Entrance 4) until the ramp has been completed.
- WTB Atrium Entrance (Entrance 2) – this entrance will be closed for the duration of the construction.
- JBC (Entrance 3) – this entrance will remain open and unchanged.
- Division of Mathematics (Entrance 4) – apart from being used as a temporary disabled access for a short period of time (see above), this entrance will be closed.
- WTB/JBC Link (Entrance 5) – this new swipe card activated (staff only) entrance will open in June and will provide stair access to all levels of WTB and JBC. Staff are asked not to use this access for transit to the MSI.
- Fire Escapes – a separate leaflet explaining revised fire escape routes will be issued in due course, and training provided for staff.
