The Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification (CAHID) is located on the ground and 1st floors of the Medical Sciences Institute.

The award-winning staff of this Centre are amongst the most experienced in the UK in the fields of human identification, forensic anthropology, cranio-facial reconstruction and the study of the human body.

Human Identification and Forensic Anthropology

Staff at the Centre have a wide range of experience in the areas of human identification, isotopic analysis and forensic anthropology. The Centre is regularly contacted for advice and input in high-profile identification cases both at home and abroad. The cases in which staff have involvement are reflected in much of the research undertaken by the Centre, enabling it to maintain a high profile within the forensic community.

The Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification has excellent relations with local, national and international police and forensic practitioners allowing for worldwide collaborations in both research and forensic cases.

Cranio-Facial Reconstruction, Forensic and Medical Art

Lecturers within the Centre are specialists in both forensic and medical art. Their skills are utilised in forensic identification, archaeology, museums and media reconstructions through illustration, sculpture and animation. Most high profile is their work on facial reconstruction, the process of rebuilding the face from the skull, using both 3D and 2D methodologies.

Anatomy

The core remit of the Centre is the study of Anatomy. The Centre delivers high quality anatomy teaching to medical, dental and science students. Anatomy teaching is delivered via whole body dissection which allows students to develop a sound knowledge of the human body. As such we depend on the good will of donors for the ability to teach students to the highest standard possible.

Award

On January 14th, 2010, at the CLS Review of the Year, the Human Identification Research Group was awarded the Brian Cox Award for Excellence in Public Engagement. This is a great achievement based on our work with the media, schools education and public outreach.
