Experts at the University’s Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) have been awarded a grant of $5 million over the next three years to support the Structure-guided Drug Discovery Coalition (SDDC). The consortium is working to identify lead compounds which can be used to develop advanced drug discovery programmes against malaria and tuberculosis.

Daylight is made from a spectrum of wavelengths and plants possess receptors that can detect red and blue light. Blue light is important for plant growth and yet inhibits the immune response of potato plants to Phytophthora infestans, making them more susceptible to potato late blight, a research team featuring plant scientists from the James Hutton Institute and the University of Dundee has discovered.

Latest research from the lab of Dr Tony Ly describes a new proteomic analysis methodology for samples with a low cell number. This method could assist researchers across the globe when analysing rare cell subsets in the body, including immune cells and circulating tumour cells. The work was published in Molecular and Cellular Proteomics.

The University of Dundee has been awarded the Bronze mark of the Race Equality Charter, for a period of five years. The award is granted by Advance HE via a peer review process and recognises the work the University has done so far to meet the standards of the Race Equality Charter and improve the representation, progression and success of minority ethnic staff and students.

The Royal Society’s first open access title, Open Biology, has reached its 10th Anniversary. To kick off a year of celebration, Subject Editors have highlighted their favourite articles from the past decade. Of the nine top publications selected, two are from Dundee, with work from the research groups of Julian Blow and Miratul Muqit being highlighted.

Fergus Preston, who is undertaking a PhD within the DDU and WCAIR, was one of 10 successful applicants for the Scientific Update Young Chemist award. This award is open to PhD students presenting work at the Scientific update 7th Winter Process Chemistry Conference, 8-9 December 2021.

Dr Graham Christie has been appointed as Academic Regional Lead (ARL) for South East Asia (ASEAN). “I am delighted to be taking on the ARL role for South East Asia and very much looking forward to working with the international team. I am particularly excited by the opportunities that the role affords in working with colleagues from across the University and beyond to continue to develop our strategy for recruitment of students from the ASEAN region,” said Graham.

Three PhD students from the MRC PPU have successfully made It through to the final round of the Biotechnology Young Entrepreneurs Scheme (YES). Ailsa Black (Rousseau lab), Bill Carton (Sapkota lab) and Lee Armstrong (Kulathu lab) took part as team “Affinitas Biosciences Ltd” with their idea to supplement a chewing gum with a nanobody that specifically targets and inhibits tooth decaying bacteria.
