The Scottish Government has confirmed a new £10 million life sciences institute for Dundee. “We welcome this announcement from the Scottish Government that they are to provide £10 million to form the Scottish Institute for Cell Signalling at Dundee,” said Sir Philip Cohen who will be leading research at the Scottish Institute for Cell Signalling

Philip Cohen has been elected a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in recognition of his significant contributions to science. Membership of the NAS is one of the highest honours given to a scientist or engineer in the United States. Sir Philip will be inducted into the Academy next April during its 146th annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

SULSA is an alliance of six universities aimed at embedding the Life Sciences in Scotland as a world leading force by bringing together resources and coherent planning of research strategy. The formation of SULSA has been boosted by a £76m investment programme supported by the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) and the constituent universities. SULSA is offering PhD studentships in its three research themes: Cell Biology, Systems Biology and Translational Biology.

The continued expansion of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee will be marked with the opening this week of a new Division of Molecular and Environmental Microbiology. The new Division is housed in the Medical Sciences Institute, which has been given a £6 million refurbishment to accommodate this and other new units within the College of Life Sciences.

The Wellcome Trust, the UK's largest medical research charity, today announces the launch of its innovative new clinical PhD programmes at centres of excellence across the UK. The £40 million initiative is part of a major investment in postgraduate biomedical research training in the UK and will significantly increase the support that the Trust provides for clinicians wishing to undertake rigorous research training.

Teaching and research activities based on a unique collection of juvenile skeletal remains held at the University of Dundee have been boosted by a significant donation from a local trust. The R. J. Larg Family Trust has presented £2500 to the University’s Unit of Human Anatomy and Forensic Anthropology to help preserve the Scheuer Collection and allow it to be safely developed for wider use.

On 11 October 2006 Linda Morris and Nick Brewer were awarded the Honorary Graduates' Award for Innovative Teaching. Linda and Nick redeveloped the chemistry course and received the award for "Making first year chemistry modules a foundation course for Life Sciences students".
