The University of Dundee’s Dr Sarah Coulthurst will lead a £2.7 million effort to investigate whether a ‘nanoweapon’ could be deployed in the global battle against antimicrobial resistance. The World Health Organisation recently ranked antimicrobial resistance as one of the ten biggest threats to global health. As such, there is an urgent need to develop new treatments to prevent millions of lives being lost to diseases that are routinely treated with drugs such as antibiotics at present.

Juliana Oliveira De Souza, a visiting student from Brazil on the Science without Borders programme has had the work she conducted in Dundee published in the highly-respected journal ChemMedChem. Juliana undertook the third year of her undergraduate degree in Dundee as part of the 2015/16 BSc Biological Chemistry and Drug Discovery degree programme.

The Wellcome Trust has awarded a grant of £800,000 in support of structural biology and drug discovery in the College of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee. The grant has allowed the installation of new X-ray diffraction equipment and a robotic sample changer. The new equipment is for research in single crystal X-ray diffraction, which is the most powerful technique for revealing accurate three-dimensional molecular structures.
