    Last year was unlike any other, with no exception for the School of Life Sciences Research Staff Association (SLSRSA) at the University of Dundee. If you are unfamiliar with SLSRSA, there’s a clue in the name – we are here to represent research staff within the SLS. We are a small group of volunteers, mainly post docs and research assistants, who seek to improve our fellow community through social events, career development assistance and networking opportunities.

    Research by Kris Clark, a former postdoc in Philip Cohen lab, led to the discovery eight years ago that the SIK subfamily of protein kinases suppress the production of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 by phosphorylating and activating CRTC3, co-activator of the transcription factor CREB.  Excitingly, pharmacological inhibition of the SIKs greatly enhanced the production of IL-10, and transformed macrophages from an inflammatory M1 state to an anti-inflammatory M2b state that is thought to be important for the resolution of inflammation and the repair of tissue damage.

    Despite the coronavirus lockdown, researchers from MRC PPU are continuing to attend online meetings, seminars and conferences to share ideas with researchers around the world. Last week, Nicola Darling, a postdoctoral researcher in Philip Cohen’s lab, moderated the Health and Sustainable Development session at the Third Central Asian Research Forum on Sustainable Development and Innovation that involved researchers based in or from Kazakhstan.
