Professor Irwin McLean of the University of Dundee has been awarded the prestigious Buchanan Medal of the Royal Society. The Buchanan Medal is awarded by the Royal Society, the world’s oldest scientific academy in continuous existence, for distinguished contributions to the medical sciences.

A crucial ‘on switch’ that boosts the body’s defences against infections has been successfully identified in new scientific research. The breakthrough made by researchers at the University of Aberdeen and the University of Dundee could lead to the development of new drugs to enhance the body’s immune responses to attack, which could benefit people suffering from cancer and other serious conditions.

A James Hutton Institute and University of Dundee scientist has been awarded a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant to undertake research on the fundamental mechanisms that underpin the inheritance of genetic characteristics in cereal crop breeding. It is hoped that results may assist the development of new cereal varieties suited to challenging growing conditions.
