    This month (20 February 2014) Dr. Michele Tinti of the Division of Cell & Developmental Biology delivered the inaugural Cheryll Tickle Prize Lecture: "Evolution of signal multiplexing in the vertebrate animals". Dr. Tinti was been awarded the first Cheryll Tickle Prize for Cell and Developmental Biology which aims to acknowledge the work of PhD students or Postdoctoral Fellows working in the Division of Cell and Developmental Biology. Dr. Tinti was awarded the biennial prize by worth £500 by Head of Division professor Kate Storey.

    The College of Life sciences is delighted to announce that after a three-week closure The Garland Café will reopen on Monday 24 February 2014. The new management company Elior, were awarded the tender for the café after a rigorous procurement process in which staff from across the College of Life Sciences were involved, communicating their needs and expectations of the café; Elior were the popular choice. Professor Mike Ferguson, Dean of Research at the College said:

    Teachers from Dundee primary schools attended a Continuing Professional Development training session led by  Dr Nicola Stanley-Wall and Dr James Chalmers of the Division of Molecular Microbiology at the College of Life Sciences. Held at the Dundee Science Centre, the aim of the session was to maximise the impact of the hugely succesful Magnificent Microbes outreach event, which in 2010 and 2012 set the gold standard for University Outreach activitities with schools and and the general public.

    A significant milestone in the development of a potential new antimalarial medicine has been reached by scientists at the University of Dundee, in partnership with the Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV). A compound developed in the Drug Discovery Unit at Dundee has been selected by MMV, following a positive recommendation by MMV’s Expert Scientific Advisory Committee, to enter preclinical development.

We are pleased to announce that professional comedian Susan Morrison will be facilitating the ‘Bright Club - Finding Humour in Your Research’ workshop on Thursday 20th March 2014 from 10am-3pm (Scrymgeour Building). Susan Morrison has trained hundreds of people from Universities to find and communicate their research to different audiences.

Their communication skills will be put to the test this Saturday when they will offer their presentations to members of the public at the Free Community Focus Day, as part of Science in the City.

    The Academy of Medical Sciences announced this week that Professor Dario Alessi FRS FRSE FMedSci will deliver the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Distinguished Lecture in the Medical Sciences on 2 July 2014, as part of the annual Fellows Admission Day. Professor Alessi, Director of the MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit at the University of Dundee, was elected as a Fellow of the Academy in 2012.
