    The Japan Prize Foundation has announced the laureates of its 2012 Japan Prize, one of the world’s most prestigious awards in science and technology, and one of them is Dr Nick Lydon, an alumnus and honorary graduate of the University of Dundee.

    Researchers from the College of Life Sciences', Division of Biological Chemistry and Drug Discovery have come up with a new innovative approach in the quest to reduce failure rates in the drug discovery process and fight "molecular obesity". Professor Andrew Hopkins and his team have developed a mathematical formula that they believe has the potential to more effectively identify compounds that have the best chance of being successfully developed into drugs to treat and protect against disease.

    The University of Dundee's inaugural Stephen Fry Award for Public Engagement in Research has been given to Professor Sue Black and the team in the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification. The work of Professor Black and her colleagues at CAHID was shown to millions of people through the BBC series 'History Cold Case' and they are also extremely active in public engagment with schools and community groups.

The 9 secondary school students have been part of a Royal Society funded partnership between Bell Baxter High and the Division of Molecular Microbiology at the College.
