Dr. Victoria Cowling has been awarded one of three highly coveted Lister Research Prizes for 2011. These prizes which give young scientists the opportunity to develop their potential as research scientists by giving them £200,000 in flexible funding over a five-year period. The Lister Institute's approach to scientific support continues to be unique in that it funds tenured and non-tenured researchers, clinicians and non-clinicians and has no priority diseases or restrictions on the research area supported.

Gerhard May has been named the "Best Teacher for Assessment and Feedback" in the recent DUSA "Inspire" student-led teaching awards. Dean of the School of Learning and Teaching David Coates said, “There is no doubt that this kind of award is recognising excellence in learning and teaching, and Gerhard should be justly proud of his success.”

Professor Doreen Cantrell, Head of the College of Life Sciences and Vice-Principal of the University of Dundee, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Professor Cantrell is one of 44 new Fellows and eight new Foreign Members elected to the Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of science. She has been recognized for her internationally renowned work in the field of immunology.

The University of Dundee has appointed five new Professors, two of whom are from the College of Life Sciences. Timothy Newman of the Division of Cell and Developmental Biology is the Chair of Biophysics and Caroline Wilkinson of the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification is the Personal Chair of Craniofacial Identification.
