The College of Life Sciences is committed to a programme of maximizing the impact of its research in terms of the social and educational benefits to society and aims to provide support to its staff, postdocs and students in all outreach projects and activities.

CLS Outreach projects aspire to create a culture of knowledge sharing and communication by accessing the widest possible audience through a variety of technological and artistic media ensuring that the understanding of science is delivered in a variety of novel and stimulating ways.

Participation in outreach-based impact activities is on the rise in the College of Life Sciences. In 2008, 40% Principal Investigators and 10% Postdoctoral researchers participated at least one social impact activity. In 2009, 54% Principal investigators and 12% postdoctoral researchers were involved in 53 different public engagement activities.

In 2010, 57% (45/79 Principal Investigators) and 14% of postdoctoral researchers participated in one or more social or outreach activity. This reached 5,188 schools students, 310 members of the general public (directly) and 2 million viewers nationwide (through TV documentaries).
